Wayne L. Powell

Wayne L. Powell, 81, of Huntington, IN, died Tuesday, April 16, 2019, at Golden Years Homestead, Fort Wayne.

Mr. Powell graduated from Huntington High School in 1955.  He served in the United States Navy and was stationed on the Destroyer USS Caperton and at the Pentagon. He was a postman for the United States Post Office in Huntington and then was on the Huntington Fire Department and served as the fire chief from 1980 to 1984.  He was a member of the Huntington Common Council from 2004 to 2008, and a member of the VFW 2689, finance officer for American Legion Post 7 and a member and past commander of Amvets.

He was born Nov. 27, 1937, in Huntington to James and Winnie Pyles Powell. He married Shirley (Rennie) Bullock on June 14, 1978, and she survives.

He is survived by two sons, Scott Powell, of Daytona, FL, and Rodney (Judy) Powell, of Fort Wayne; three daughters, Tammy (Tim) Dalton and Jodi (Sam) PeGan, both of Huntington, and Shawn Zimmerman, of Maryland; a stepson, Colin (Machelle) Bullock, of Huntington; a stepdaughter, Carolyn (Dick) Truitt, of Huntington; a brother, Keith (Gail) Powell, of Mesa, AZ; a sister, Janice Unger, of Bourbonnais, IL; and several grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a stepson, John Bullock.

There will be no calling hours. A military graveside burial will be held Tuesday, April 23, 2019, at 2 p.m.  at Marion National Cemetery, Marion.
