Keith D. 'Alex' Smart

Keith Duane “Alex” Smart, 90, of Huntington, IN, died Sunday, July 14, 2019, at 1:34 a.m. at Visiting Nurse and Hospice Home in Fort Wayne.

Mr. Smart was a 1947 graduate of Lancaster Township High School. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Huntington, Knights of Columbus, VFW Post 2689, American Legion Post 7, Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge 837 and International Union of Operating Engineers. He was inducted into the Knights of Columbus International Bowling Hall of Fame in March 2019. He spent most of his work experience as an operating engineer for LI Griffin and Sons and G & L Corporation. He was the oldest living member of IUOE Local 103 of Fort Wayne.

Mr. Smart was a United States Marine, 1st Marine Division, 5th Marine Regiment from 1950 to 1952 and fought on the front lines in Korea and received a Purple Heart and Korean One Star.

He was born April 13, 1929, in Mt. Vernon, IL, to Bart A. and Olive Roach Smart. He married Barbara Bickel on March 3, 1951, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Huntington, and she preceded him in death on July 30, 1997.

Survivors include six sons, Mike (Cheryl) Smart, of Columbia City; Dave (Lisa) Smart, Tom (Trina) Smart, Nick Smart, and Greg (Carol) Smart, all of Huntington; and Charles (Tina) Smart, of Stevens Pointe, WI; five daughters, Jean Williams, of Columbia City; and Kathy Bair, Raine (Steve) Edington, Theresa (Mark) Bailey and Angie (Ed) Tackett, all of Huntington; two brothers, Leroy (Nancy) Smart, of Roanoke, and B. Allen (Jessie) Smart, of Huntington; a sister, Mable Weller, of Ohio; 32 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Calling is Wednesday, July 17, 2019, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., with Recitation of the Rosary at 5 p.m., at the Myers Funeral Home Huntington Chapel, 2901 Guilford St., Huntington. A funeral Mass will be held Thursday, July 18, 2019, at 11 a.m., with one hour of visitation prior to the service, at the St. Mary Catholic Church, 903 N. Jefferson St., Huntington with Rev. Tony Steinacker officiating. Interment will be at the Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
