Michael E. Vardaman

Michael Eugene Vardaman, 67, of Columbia City, IN, and having family in Huntingotn, IN, died Monday, Oct. 21, 2019, at Parkview Whitley Hospital.

Mr. Vardaman’s formative years were spent in South Whitley, where he graduated from South Whitley High School in 1971. He later earned an insurance license. He worked for International Harvester in Fort Wayne from 1971 until the plant closing in 1981. He then went to work for Farm Bureau Insurance. In 1991, he started his own insurance agency, Vardaman Insurance, which he operated until his death.

He was a member of the Oak Grove United Methodist Church, where he put his singing talents to use participating in the church choir. He mentored children at the South Whitley Elementary School. He and his wife made their home in South Whitley until moving to rural Columbia City in 1979.

He was born Feb. 27, 1952, in Presque Isle, ME, Eugene E. and Norma R. Tardy Vardaman. Hee married the love of his life and Candice Ann Schuman on Nov. 11, 1972, and she survives.

Survivors include two sons, Ty C. (Melissa S.) Vardaman, of Fort Wayne, and Ryan (Gina) Vardaman, of South Whitley; two sisters, Susie (Brett McDonald) Bingley, of Columbia City, and Cynthia Niemann, of Huntington; a brother, William (Jo) Joy, of Chicago; six grandchildren, Ross Vardaman, Maximus Vardaman, Ian Vardaman, Savanna Vardaman, Lydia Vardaman and Kinsey Vardaman; and a great-grandchild.

Calling is Sunday, Oct. 27, 2019, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, 207 N. Main St., Columbia City. A funeral service will be held Monday, Oct. 28, 2019, at 10 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in the South Whitley Cemetery.
