Bart Allen Smart

Bart Allen Smart, 87, of Huntington, IN, died Wednesday, Dec. 9, 2020, at The Tipton House in Huntington.

Mr. Smart was a 1951 graduate of Lancaster High School.  He served in the U. S. Army in 1952.  After being a Crane Operator since he was 18 years old, he retired from G & L Corporation.  He was a union member for 68 years with IUOE Local 103, Fort Wayne, a member of SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church and a First Degree member of Knights of Columbus.

He was born on May 30, 1933, in Huntington, to Bart A. and Olive Roach Smart. He married Carol Rose Schmitt on July 4, 1957, at SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church.  She preceded him in death on Dec. 7, 2000. He then married Jessie Warford Keyser on May 6, 2006.  She survives and resides in Huntington.

Additional survivors include two sons, Ronald (Jackie) Smart and Lawrence (Kari) Smart, both of Huntington; three daughters, Karen (Shane) Bickel, Susan (Jeffrey) Funk and Polly Smart, all of Huntington; two step-sons, Gary (Sally) Keyser and Roger Keyser, both of Huntington; one step-daughter, Susan K. Dinkel, of Wisconsin; one brother, LeRoy (Nancy) Smart, of Roanoke; one sister, Mabel Weller, of Howard, OH; 11 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, and multiple step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Julie Ann Smart, and two step-sons, Mark Keyser and DeWayne ‘Dewie’ Keyser.

Calling will be held on Monday, Dec.14, 2020, from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m., at SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, 860 Cherry St., Huntington, with Rev. Tony Steinacker presiding. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Huntington. McElhaney- Hart Funeral Home, Huntington, is in charge of arrangements.
