Rev. Dr. Thomas C. Rough

Rev. Dr. Thomas C. Rough, 83, of Warren, IN, died Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2020, at 12:40 p.m., at Heritage Pointe in Warren.

Rev. Dr. Rough received his bachelor of arts from Indiana Wesleyan University, his masters of divinity from Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary, and his doctorate of divinity from the University of Indianapolis, where he would later be named as Distinguished Trustee for the University in 2002. He was a pastor at Plymouth Pretty Lake Trinity United Methodist Church from 1958 to 1966, senior pastor at South Bend Central United Methodist Church from 1966 to 1973, Fort Wayne Faith United Methodist Church from 1973 to 1979, and Michigan City First United Methodist Church from 1979 to 1985. He was superintendent at Huntington District United Methodist Church from 1985 to 1988, senior pastor at High Street United Methodist Church in Muncie from 1988 to 1995, Superintendent at Calumet District United Methodist Church from 1995 to 2002, when he retired. Upon his retirement, he worked as a development associate for Garrett Evangelical Theological Seminary from 2002 to 2005 and then as executive pastor and also interim pastor at Paradise Valley United Methodist Church in Arizona from 2005 to 2013. He was president of the school board in Plymouth, director of the Methodist Hospitals in Gary and Merrillvile and a member of the board of ordained ministry for the United Methodist Church chair of the Cabinet in 1998. He was named Outstanding Alumni in Religion/Philosophy from Indiana Wesleyan University in 1992 and Sagamore of the Wabash by Governor Robert Orr in 1985. He was chairman of the Police Merit Commission and chairman of the Salvation Army Advisory Board in Michigan City. He was the instructor for the Academy for Community Leadership and a guest lecturer on the PBS Christianity Series in Muncie. He was a board member for the Indiana United Methodist Memorial Home in Warren, was on the United Way board of directors in South Bend, was a member of the board of global ministries in Fort Wayne and a member of the Marshall County tax adjustment board in Plymouth.

He was born on July 25, 1937, in Niles, MI, to Paul and Florence Gonser Rough. He married Janet K. Whitesell on Oct. 7, 1962. She survives in Warren.

Additional survivors include a son, Thomas (Lisa) Rough, of Cave Creek, AZ; a daughter, Elizabeth (Rodney) Crispen, of Yorktown, VA; a brother, Harry (Dee) Rough, of Niles, MI; sisters, Ilah (Sam) Hebner of Plymouth and Lois (Mark) Hendricks of Denton, TX; and grandchildren, Nicola (Markus) Minton, Livia Crispen and Ian Crispen.

Due to Covid-19, a private family service will be held. Inurnment will be at Oak Hill Cemetery in Plymouth. A celebration of life service will be held at a later date. Arrangements have been entrusted to Glancy-H. Brown & Son Funeral Home in Warren.
