Clayton L. “Sonny” Carter

Clayton L. “Sonny” Carter, 78, of Huntington, IN, died Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2021, at 1:09 a.m., at Parkview Randallia Hospital in Fort Wayne.

Mr. Carter retired as a dispatcher with the Huntington County Sheriff’s Department. Prior to this he worked at Jack Cross Ford-Lincoln-Mercury in Wabash. He also was the manager of the Huntington Municipal Airport. He was a member of Bethesda Freewill Baptist Church in Andrews and previously served on the Andrews Town Council.

He was born on Oct. 21, 1942, in Keene, NH, to Clayton G. and Sylvia Fontaint Carter. He married Hazel Roach Neukam Carter on Nov. 7, 1966. She survives and resides in Huntington.

Additional survivors include three sons, Cliffton (Lynn) Neukam, of Florida, John W. Neukam, of Fort Wayne, and Clayton E. “C.C.” Carter, of Fort Wayne; one daughter, Sandra E. Neukam, of Fort Wayne; two sisters, Barbara Baird, of New Hampshire, and Jean Wilder of New Hampshire; 10 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, Ronald Keith Neukam, and one grandchild.

Calling will take place on Saturday, Jan. 9, 2021, from noon to 2 p.m., at McElhaney-Hart Funeral Home, 715 N. Jefferson St., Huntington. A funeral service will immediately follow with Rev. Worley Newsome officiating.

Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery in Andrews.
