H. Dean Reckard

H. Dean Reckard, 97, of Huntington, IN, died Monday, March 1, 2021, at Heritage Pointe of Huntington.

Mr. Reckard was a 1942 graduate of Huntington Township High School. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1945 on the USS Amesbury DE-66 escort in the North Atlantic for 18 months and one year on the USS Klondike in the Pacific. He was a Machinist Mate 3rd Class and was involved in the first seven days of the Normandy Invasion. He worked as a mechanic for 10 years at Reckards Truck Repair and 21 years on contract with the Huntington County Community School Corporation as a bus repair mechanic. He was a member of New Hope United Brethren in Christ Church. He was a member of the Indiana Winnebago Club.

He was born on Jan. 22, 1924, in Huntington, to Walter and Flora Rupley Reckard. He married Elsie M. Wine on Dec. 23, 1943, at the Huntington Church of the Brethren. She survives.

Additional survivors include two daughters, Kay (Doug) Beaver, of Huntington, and Dee (Gary) Montel, of North Manchester; nine grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sons, Ken Reckard and Hal Reckard; and a granddaughter, Churie Owen.

Calling will take place on Sunday, March 7, from 2 to 3 p.m., at the Myers Funeral Home Huntington Chapel, with funeral service following immediately after. Masks and social distancing are required.

A private interment will be at the Gardens of Memory Cemetery.
