Donald R. Smothers

Donald R. Smothers, 82, of Roanoke, IN, died Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2021, at his home.

Mr. Smothers attended Harrisburg High School. He worked various jobs as a teen to earn money before he started as a stock boy at S.S. Kresge. He moved up into different roles for the company before managing his own store. He retired on Jan. 30, 1995, after 35 years with K-Mart as a re-buyer for K-Mart Distribution Centers. Following his retirement, he stayed busy merchandising displays and counter setups for various grocery and retail stores.

He was born on Aug. 26, 1939, in Harrisburg, IL, to Arthur and Anna Wilkins Smothers. He married Ann S. Duckworth on Sept. 4, 1960. She survives.

Additional survivors include two daughters, Karen (Dan) Sherbahn and Sharon Lay; a son, Mark (Luann) Smothers; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Calling will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 7, 2021, from noon to 1:45 p.m., at DeMoney-Grimes Funeral Home, 600 Countryside Drive, Columbia City. A funeral service will follow at 2 p.m., with Rev. Brad Miller of First Church of God officiating.

A committal service will follow at Mr. Smothers’ home. Burial will be at Pleasant Chapel Cemetery in rural Roanoke. The family encourages casual attire.
