John P. Overman, 94, of Huntington, IN, died Sunday, Oct. 3, 2021, at Heritage Pointe of Huntington.
Mr. Overman graduated from Bippus High School and played basketball for the Bippus Tigers. Following graduation, he joined the U. S. Navy and served during WWII. He served aboard the USS PCS 1386 in Key West, FL, and Havana, Cuba. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, American Legion Post No. 160 in Roanoke and VFW Post No. 2689. He worked on the railroad for more than 40 years as a fireman and engineer. He started out on the Erie Railroad as a fireman on steam engines. He was employed by the Erie Railroad, then Erie Lackawana Railway and finally Conrail where he retired in 1989.
He was born on Oct. 3, 1927, in Wabash, to Raymond J. and Zoe L. Layden Overman. He married Mary Lou Christman on April 19, 1952, in SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Huntington. She survives in Huntington.
Additional survivors include a son, Thomas G. Overman, of Huntington; three daughters, Stephenie (Stephen Taylor) Overman, of Reston, VA, Julie (Bruce Dewar) Overman, of Leesburg, VA, and Jacqueline (Warren) Myers, of Huntington; one sister, Sally B. Hipes, of Suwannee, GA; three grandchildren, Ryan Denbo, Kristen (Justin) Bischoff and Evan (Holly) Myers; and six great-grandchildren.
Calling will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2021, from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m., at the McElhaney-Hart Funeral Home, Huntington, with recitation of the Rosary at 9 a.m. at the funeral home. Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church, 903 N. Jefferson St., Huntington.
Burial will be at a later date at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Huntington.
