Alice Whitmore

Alice Whitmore, 96, was welcomed into her heavenly home on October 26, 2021 at Heritage Pointe in Warren, IN. Alice was born July 10, 1925, to Roy Williams and Hazel Anita (Carr) Whitmore in Huntington County, IN. She graduated from Lancaster High School in 1943 and from Manchester College, North Manchester, IN, in 1947 with a degree in music education. She also received her Master's Degree from Ball State University in Muncie, IN. Alice taught 43 years in Huntington County secondary and elementary schools, mainly at Lancaster.

Becoming a member of Salamonie Church of the Brethren in 1943, she filled a variety of positions including organist, vocalist, pianist, choir director, music arranger, Bible Study, Women’s Fellowship, Finance, Annual Conference Delegate, and Bible School helper.

Alice was a member of Sweet Adelines, a ladies’ barbershop chorus in Marion, the Best Years Singers, the annual community presentation of the “Messiah,” Home Extension Club, Chautauqua Club, Indiana Retired Teachers, and she worked at voting precincts for many years. She also gave piano lessons and participated in events at the Forks of the Wabash, Salamonie Reservoir, and Huntington Heritage Days. After retirement, she continued to read to children and assisted with adult literacy.

Having many hobbies, Alice enjoyed genealogy, researching history, Indian artifacts, music education, artwork, knitting, sewing, table games, the concert series in Huntington and Ft. Wayne, Kiwanis travelogues, nature walks, cats, old barns, covered bridges, antiques, reading, travel, and movies. She was a lifelong learner.

Alice is survived by five nieces: Janet (Robert) Erick, Hamilton, MT; Jean (Michael) Alexander, St. Regis, MT; Mary Alice Beck, Warren, IN; Annette (Phillip) Mock, Syracuse, IN; and Joyce (Thomas) Olsen, Sioux Falls, SD. She has many great and great-great nieces and nephews. Alice is predeceased by her mother, father, brother James D. Whitmore, sister Ruth L. Stinebaugh, and niece Jane E. Smith.

Alice was beloved by family and many friends. She greeted everyone with a smile and seemed to know everyone in Huntington County. She will be deeply missed.

Visitation will be from 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm Friday, November 12, 2021 at Bailey-Love Mortuary, 35 W. Park Dr., Huntington, IN. Visitation will also be held from 11:00 am - 1:00 pm followed by a Celebration of Life Memorial Service at 1:00 pm Saturday, November 13, 2021 at Bailey-Love Mortuary with Pastor Mel Zumbrun officiating. Burial with a Graveside Service will be in Lancaster Cemetery in Lancaster, IN.
