Hillard “Ray” Weikel, 94, formerly of Ossian, IN, and with familiy ties to Roanoke, IN, died Wednesday, Nov. 24, 2021, at Kendallville Manor.
Mr. Weikel served in the U.S. Navy where he was a First Class Fireman on the USS. Maddox from 1946 to 1947. After retiring from the Navy, he was a bricklayer at International Harvester in Fort Wayne for over 30 years.
He was born on July 12, 1927, in Ossian, to Hershal and Zola Baker Weikel. He married Ruth Marie DeVaux on Nov. 20, 1948, in Fort Wayne. She preceded him in death in 2019.
Survivors include three daughters, Cynthia Meredith, of Englewood, FL, Anita (Ronald) Witte, of Coldwater, MI, and Janice (Kim) Roberts, of Coldwater, MI; three sons, Gerald “Gary” (Janet) Weikel, of Ossian, Richard “Rick” (Melany) Weikel, of Roanoke, and Kent (Tina) Weikel, of New Haven; 16 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Richard “Dick” Meredith.
A funeral service took place on Thursday, Dec. 2, 2021, at the Marion V.A. Hospital Chapel, Marion. Hite Funeral Home, Kendalville, handled arrangements.
Burial with military honors took place at Marion National Cemetery.
