George Edward Runkel, 80, of Huntington, IN, died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2022, at 8:30 p.m., at his home in rural Huntington County.
Mr. Runkel graduated from Hartford Center High School where he lettered in cross country, baseball and basketball. He worked at Active Products for 22 years, where he learned skilled trades in Tool & Die. He finished his work career with General Motors, retiring after 17 years of service. He was a hobby farmer, raising horses, hogs and 4-H lambs. He was a member of the Banquo Christian Church, the Moose, the Eagles, the Mississinewa 1812 and the Tri State Steam Engine Association.
He was born on Jan. 28, 1941, in Adams County, to Harold and Dottie Morgan Runkel. He married Patricia Jane Murphy on Feb. 22, 1963, in Jay County. She preceded him in death on June 8, 2018.
Survivors include a daughter, Jackie (Mitch) Hobbs, of Huntington; a son, Patrick (Melanie) Runkel, of Bluffton; three sisters, Joann Bolke, of Gas City, Gloria Anderson, of Roanoke, and Maxine Ferris, of Geneva; three brothers, Richard Runkel, of Marion, David Runkel, of Wabash, and Bobby Runkel, of Fort Wayne; a brother-in-law, Randy (Diane) Murphy, of Portland; two sisters-in- law, Barb (Jerry) Kipfer, of Muncie, and Sue Murphy, of Berne; eight grandchildren, Kandi (Josh) Hale-Roseberry, Kristie (Eric) McEntyre, Josh Donald, Tom (Makayla Davis) Hobbs, Chayton Foster, Dakota Foster, Levi Runkel and Jacob Runkel; and 13 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Kimberly K. Runkel; and a granddaughter, Samantha Mikeyla Foster.
A celebration of life service will take place at a later date this summer. Bailey-Love Mortuary, Huntington, is handling arrangements.
