Phillip D. Underhill

Phillip D. Underhill, 76, with ties to Huntington, died on April 3, at his home in Vermont.

Mr. Underhill graduated from Huntington High School in 1964. He graduated from Ball State University in 1968. He worked for the Federal Bureau of Investigation 23 years. After retiring from the bureau, he worked for the state of Vermont. He was a member of the Federated Church of East Arlington and on the Arlington Food Shelf Board of Trustees.

Phil was fortunate to have many highlights in his life – his marriage of 54 years to Karen, two healthy, productive children, four grandchildren, and the opportunity to retire in a state he loved. However, the highlight of the 1964 Indiana State Championship Basketball Final ranks near the top of his list. His small school of Huntington High defeated the larger schools in the basketball state and lost the final game by two points to LaFayette Jeff High School. Phil was a forward starter, and maintained the discipline Coach Straight expected throughout his life.

He was born on Dec. 21, 1945, in Huntington Hospital, in Huntington, to Garth and Mary Ellen Underhill. He married Karen Haugsrud Underhill. She survives him.

Additional survivors include a daughter, Elizabeth Younce (David Younce), of Arlington; a son, Jason Underhill (Nicole Woodard), of Sunderland, Vermont; a sister, Jane Friermood of Huntington; a brother, John Underhill, of Auburn and four grandchildren Logan David Younce, Nathan Phillip Younce, Parker Underhill and Brenner Underhill.

Funeral services were held on Saturday April 9, at the Federated Church of East Arlington, Vermont.

Memorials may be made to The Federated Church of East Arlington, Arlington Food Shelf, or Arlington Rescue Squad, in care of Hanson Walbridge & Shea Arlington Chapel, P.O. Box 528 Arlington, VT 05250.
