Devon “PeeWee” W. Bates, 81, of Huntington, died May 25, at Lutheran Hospital.
Mr. Bates graduated from Huntington Central High School in 1959. He retired from ITT Aerospace in Fort Wayne, IN after more than 20 years of service.
He was also a MAC college football referee for more than 20 years.
He was a member of Single Action Shooting Society, Deer Creek Regulators, and Auglaize Rough Riders.
He was born Sept. 2, 1940, in Huntington, to Floyd Bates and Ruth Houston Bates. He married Bonnie Bates March 25, 1960. She preceded him in death. He also was preceded in death by a daughter, Teresa Bates; and grandchildren Carolyn Brown, Jacob Stephan and Lee Bates.
Survivors include children Paule D. (Julie) Bates, of Santa Cruz, Calif., Allen (Diane) Bates, of Murfreesboro, Tenn., James (Kim) Wood, of Roanoke, Diane (John) Walker, of Mich., Andrea (Peggy McCune) Bates, of Columbia City, and Robin Jones of Sacramento, Calif.; grandchildren Brooke (Justin) Bates-Kubin, Kaitlin (Caleb) Jones-Hurst, Halle (Brandon) Blount, Gillian Bates, Brittany (Terry) Garland, Aron Brown, Daymond Bates, Griffin Bates, Jerade Stephan, John Stephan, Josh Amick, Justyn Amick, Jordan (Kimberly) Amick, Joel Amick, Jayden Walker, Dwight Pence, Ryan Pence and Josh Wood; and two great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be June 4, 10 a.m. - noon, with funeral services immediately following, at Bailey-Love Mortuary. Denise Schwabeow will officiate.
Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Huntington.
