Dennis A. Sonner, 70, of Columbia City, and formerly of Huntington County, Indiana, passed away at 12:08 pm Tuesday, June 14, 2022, at Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne.
Dennis was born on July 29, 1951, in Huntington, the son of Fred Sonner and Margaret (Overholt) Sonner.
He graduated from Huntington High School with the class of 1969. He served in the United States Air Force Reserves. He married the love of his life Marilyn Grossman on June 12, 1971, in Huntington.
He joined the Huntington County Sheriff’s department as a reserve deputy and later became a full-time officer. During his career he served as a deputy, detective, and an Indiana certified law enforcement firearms instructor. The Roanoke firearms range was dedicated in his honor as the Sonner-Wood Range. He retired from the Huntington County Sheriff’s department as a
Captain in 2013.
Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Marilyn Sonner of Columbia City, IN; two daughters, Stacie R. (Brian) Ehler of West Olive, Mich., Andrea L. (Jerry) Hoover of Fort Wayne; six grandchildren, Kassie, Noah, Mazie, Izaiah, Myles, Mason; a great-grandson, Hudson; and a brother, Kenneth (Mary) Sonner of Zionsville.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. Monday, June 20, 2022, at Bailey-Love Mortuary, 35 West Park Drive, Huntington, IN. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, June 20, 2022, at Bailey-Love Mortuary with Kenneth Sonner officiating. Burial will be in Concordia Cemetery in Fort Wayne.
