Wendell S. Thompson

Wendell S. Thompson, 92, a resident of Heritage Pointe, Warren, IN, died Monday, March 23, 2009, at his home.

Mr. Thompson was a long-time Huntington County farmer and had also worked for the Huntington County schools as a groundskeeper. He served as a children's Sunday school teacher for many years at Liberty Center Baptist Church.

Mr. Thompson attended Buckeye School in Salamonie Township and graduated from Warren High School in 1934. He served with the United States Army in the Philippines during World War II and was a member of the Brown-Doyle American Legion Post in Van Buren.

He was born April 1, 1916, in Warren to Webster and Mildred Shafer Thompson. He married Madaline Glendora Elwood on Nov. 28, 1959, in Liberty Center. His wife preceded him in death on July 13, 2005.

Survivors include three daughters, Connie (Dennis) Carpenter, of Charleston, SC; and Patty (Max) Boxell and Louanne Kaye, both of Warren; a brother, Wayne (Betty) Thompson; eight grandchildren, Chod Boxell, of Warren; Kirt Boxell, of Indianapolis; Cory Boxell, of Huntington; Amy Bullock, of Wilmington, NC; Denny Carpenter, of Phoenix, AZ; Carrie VanSickle, of San Antonio, TX; Benjamin Carpenter, of Houston, TX; and Shannon Buckley, of Bloomington; and 13 great-grandchildren.

A service was held Saturday, March 28, 2009, at at Liberty Center Baptist Church,  Liberty Center, with Dan Sommer and John McKay officiating. Interment was at Thompson Home Cemetery, Warren.
