
Alva "Al" F. Hohl, Jr. 78, of North Manchester, passed away at 10:28 am Friday, March 17, 2023 at Timbercrest Senior Living Community, North Manchester.
Al was born on January 6, 1945 in Burlington, IA, the Son of Alva F. Hohl, Sr. and Adeline (Dannenbring) Hohl. He graduated from Burlington High School, Burlington, IA, and was a graduate of Elmhurst College, BA, Eden Theological Seminary, MDiv, and United Theological Seminary, DMin. He married his first wife, Kathleen E. Hohl on August 23, 1969 in Bellwood, IL. She preceded him in death on December 10, 2013. Al then married Carole June (Hartle) Baker on October 17, 2015 in North Manchester, IN. She preceded him in death on October 28, 2022. Al was a Pastor in the United Church of Christ for 40 years before retiring. He served the parishes at First Congregational UCC in New Hampton and Ionia, IA, First Congregational UCC in Webster City, IA, Zion United Church of Christ in South Bend, IN, and First Congregational UCC in Sioux City, IA. Al was the Visitation Pastor at Clay United Methodist Church, South Bend, IN, and he was a Supply Preacher in retirement. Al was President of Webster City Kiwanis Club, and a member of the American Civil Liberties Union, Woodworkers Guild of America, and the Manchester Church of the Brethren. He enjoyed woodworking, writing, and singing in the Male Quartet, "Reverential Treatment" in South Bend. Al was also an Author, publishing "Picking Up the Pieces: When Faith and Culture Collide" and "The Heart of Prayer: Seeking the Sure Reign of God".
Survivors include his Daughter, Carolyn E. (James ) Carpenter of South Bend, IN; Son, Nathan F. (Cindy) Hohl of Platte City, MO; Step-Daughter, Julie Ann Baker (Les) Brin of Wichita, KS; Step-Son, Sean Matthew (Brandi) Baker of Ft. Wayne, IN; Grandchildren, Timothy, Amanda, Charlotte, Olivia, and Nina; and his Three step-grandchildren, Alexis, Aiden, and Aria. Al is preceded in death by his First Wife, Kathleen E. Hohl; Wife, Carole June Baker, Father, Alva F. Hohl, Sr., Mother, Adeline M. Hohl, and Sister, Mary C. Steinmaus (Hohl).
