Richard W. Johnston 97 of North Manchester and formerly of Huntington passed away on the morning of Wednesday May 24, 2023 at Timber Crest Health Care in North Manchester. Richard worked for G.M. for over 25 years. During his time at G.M., he held over 18 patents. He was a graduate of the Fort Wayne Institute of Technology and later went on to teach at the Detroit Technical College in the 50’s. Richard served his country in the United States’ Air Corp where he worked on the early stages of RADAR technology. He later helped the Space Program by developing the electric drives that were used on the Moon Rover. He often joked that his name was on the moon. Richard also belonged to the Fort Wayne Astronomical Society.
Richard was born on July 27, 1925 in Delaware Ohio the son of Lewis A. and Marium L. (Hull) Johnston. His parents preceded him in death.
He was united in marriage to the Lois Gardenour on August 30 1946 in Huntington. His wife survives
Survivors include his wife Lois Johnston of North Manchester; a son Thomas Johnston of Rochester Hills Michigan; a daughter: Brenda Johnston of Louisiana; a sister: Donna Winters of Fort Wayne; three grandchildren: Adrian Johnston of Mount Clemons Michigan, Melissa Brinkle of Charleston South Carolina, and Tina Shields of Arlington Texas; a sister in law Betty Johnston; six great grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers: Lewis Johnston, Charles Johnston, William Johnston, and Robert Johnston.
Visitation will take place on Wednesday May 31 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the New Hope United Brethren Church located at 2001 Engle Street, Huntington IN 46750.
Funeral services will take place Wednesday May 31 at 1:00 p.m. at the New Hope United Brethren Church located at 2001 Engle Street, Huntington IN 46750.
Interment will be at Gardens of Memory Cemetery
