Susan Carole Brewer, 86, of Huntington, passed away at 8:45 pm Sunday, June 4, 2023, at her home surrounded by family.
Susan was born on December 2, 1936, in Gary, IN, the daughter of Dr. Harry Stimson and Alice (Gehring) Stimson. She graduated from Len Wallace High School with the class of 1954 and received a bachelor’s degree from DePauw University in elementary education. Susan married the love of her life David L. Brewer on August 12, 1961, at the 43rd Avenue Presbyterian Church in Gary, IN. They shared 60 years of marriage before he preceded her in death on September 9, 2021.
Susan taught 2nd grade at Melton School in Gary, IN, and 1st grade at Fairview Elementary in Bloomington IN, before retiring in 1970 from Huntington County Community School Corporation. After 15 years of teaching, she took an early retirement to stay home and raise their three children. Susan was a member of the P.E.O. and Tri Kappa for many years. She was a faithful active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Huntington and served as a deacon and elder.
Susan enjoyed playing bridge, word puzzles and feeding the birds. She had a little bit of a green thumb and always had red geraniums in her flower garden. Susan had a tender heart and loved all God’s creatures, including all of her dogs who she rescued from the Huntington Humane Shelter where they became a part of their family. She always looked forward to attending theater shows and her granddaughters’ dance recitals. She was an avid fan and supporter of the Huntington North Viking athletics and never missed the chance to watch her grandchildren play sports and cheer. Susan enjoyed traveling. Her and David along with their best friends took yearly fishing trips to Wisconsin and Canada. As well as yearly visits with her family to Walt Disney World in Orlando, FL, since opening in 1971 even up until the spring before David’s passing in 2021. In fact, her family continues the tradition of visiting Walt Disney World in honor and memory of her and David. Susan was passionate about her family and showing them each how much they meant to her. Her grandchildren truly were her pride and joy. Susan’s loving, caring, and kind heart will live on in those who loved her.
Survivors include her son John S. (Jessica) Brewer of Huntington, IN; a daughter, Anne M. Betterly of Huntington, IN; and son Michael D. (Virginia) Brewer of Warren, IN; five grandchildren, Trevor, Nolan, Arianna, Gabriella, and Alisha; two great grandchildren, Emily, and Chason. She is preceded in death by husband, David L. Brewer, her father, Dr. Harry R. Stimson, mother, Alice A. Stimson, and brother, Dr. Harry Stimson.
Visitation will be from 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm Monday, June 12, 2023, at First Presbyterian Church, 50 East Tipton Street, Huntington, IN. Funeral services will be held immediately following visitation at 4:00 pm Monday, June 12, 2023, at First Presbyterian Church with Pastor John Beehler officiating. The burial will be at a later date in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Huntington.
