Leander 'Popeye' Johnson

Leander “Popeye” Johnson Jr., 69, of Huntington, IN, passed away at 12:20 pm Friday, June 16, 2023, at Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne, IN.

Leander was born on February 1, 1954, in Floyd County, KY, the son of Leander Johnson Sr. and Polly (Burke) Johnson. He attended Floyd County Schools in Kentucky before moving to Indiana. Leander worked for Ken-Koat of Huntington for 30 years and was previously employed by Schacht Rubber, Dana of Andrews and lastly at Clark’s Recycling of Huntington.

Leander was an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed playing cards, especially poker. Leander started at a young age scrapping metals for money and he continued into his adulthood as a “master” scraper. He was a hard worker and taught his children nothing comes easy. Leander was a family man and always made sure his family was taken care of and provided for.  He looked forward to teaching his grandchildren about life and sharing his wisdom. Leander’s grandchildren were his world and being called grandpa was one of his greatest blessings.                                                                                    

Survivors include his two sons, Nikkia (Lucinda) Johnson of Huntington, IN, Kevin (Christie) Johnson of Citra, FL; three daughters, Stephanie Johnson of Huntington, IN, Rebeca (Cory) Lusch of Huntington, IN, Tiffany Johnson of Huntington, IN; twenty-three, grandchildren; fourteen, great grandchildren; one, brother; six, sisters; and his companion, Debby Warner of Huntington, IN. He is preceded in death by his father, Leander Johnson, Sr., mother, Polly R. Johnson, daughter, Betty Jane Johnson, granddaughter, Aryanna Asher, granddaughter, Jestina Kelly, sister, Alka Watts and previous wife Dorothy Septer.

Visitation will be from 10:00 am - 12:00 pm Thursday, June 22, 2023, at Bailey-Love Mortuary, 35 West Park Drive, Huntington, IN.  Funeral services will be held in Kentucky.  Burial will be in Johnson Cemetery Floyed County, KY.
