Byron Smith

Byron “Barney” G. Smith, age 75, of Roanoke, IN, passed away on Saturday, July 22, 2023, at his residence. 

Barney was born on March 9, 1948, in Huntington, IN, to the late Paul and Leona (Branstrator) Smith.  He married Diane Lyn Blumer on January 22, 1971, and she survives and resides in Roanoke. 

Barney was a 1967 graduate of Huntington County Consolidated Schools and served in the United States Army.  He was a machinist at Dana Corporation for 32 years in Fort Wayne and retired in 2000.  Barney was a member of Post 160 American Legion, Roanoke, IN, for 45 years, life member at VFW 6827, St. Petersburg, FL, and 40 et 8 Local 850. 

Along with his wife, Diane, he is survived by two sons, Tyron G. (Heather) Smith, Highland, IN, Ryan W. (Nichole Karst) Smith, Roanoke, IN; one daughter, Nikkole “Nikki” Smith-Jones, Huntington, IN; one brother, Kent Smith, Roanoke, IN; one sister, Emily (Bill) Powers, Brighton, MI; 7 grandchildren, Austin P. (Josie) Smith, Elijah Smith, Maycee J. Smith, Brian Smith, Nicholas Solloway, Kenadie Jones, Cooper Jones; and one great granddaughter, Olive Drake Smith. 

Along with his parents he was preceded in death by one brother, Michael Smith; three sisters, Vonda Fearnow, Paula Stoltz, and Elisa Smith. 

A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, July 29, 2023, at 2:00 p.m., at McElhaney Funeral Home-Roanoke Chapel, 240 Crestwood Drive, Roanoke, IN. 

A Graveside burial with Military Honors will follow at Glenwood Cemetery, Roanoke, IN. 

The Family would like to invite everyone to come to the American Legion, Post 160, 1122 N. Main Street, Roanoke, IN, following the burial for a Celebration of Life from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. for family and friends.

In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to either Stillwater Hospice or Riley Children’s Hospital in care of McElhaney Funeral Home-Roanoke Chapel, 240 Crestwood Drive, Roanoke, IN 46783.
