Rev. Dr. Floyd E. Blake

The Rev. Dr. Floyd E. Blake, 96, of Warren, IN, passed away early Sunday morning, November 19, 2023, at Heritage Pointe of Warren.  Dr. Blake was born in Eaton, IN on October 21, 1927, to Lemmie and Bessie (Rhodes) Blake and was a 1945 graduate of Eaton High School.  After high school he served with the US Merchant Marines and then the 2nd Infantry, US Army until his discharge in 1947.  He attended Taylor University in Upland, IN where he was reunited and married Marjorie Hutchens on June 4, 1950, at Upland United Methodist Church celebrating 63 years of marriage together.  He then attended the University of Dubuque in Iowa before working for the YMCA in Muncie, Indiana and San Pedro, California until returning to Indiana to answer his call to ministry.  Dr. Blake served over 18 churches throughout his ministry, most associated with the United Methodist Churches of Indiana and had to retire twice because he felt he hadn’t finished serving.  Among his many accomplishments as a minister, his fondest were being the founding pastor of Good Shepherd United Methodist Church in Fort Wayne, Indiana where he served from 1964 to 1971 and all the youth he took on retreats and summer camp at Epworth Forest.  Dr. Blake’s post graduate studies began at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary, graduating in 1962, followed by Christian Theological Seminary where he earned his Doctorate Degree in 1975, and finally a Certificate of Pastoral Counseling in 1982. Dr. Blake loved spending time with his family and friends.  There was no such thing as a stranger to Dr. Blake.  He took great pleasure in telling stories, especially about growing up on a farm during the Great Depression and how he got to “try-out” for the Pittsburgh Pirates.  He also enjoyed sports (especially baseball and the Colts), camping and traveling, visiting all 50 states and many parts of Europe and Africa.  His love of traveling and serving others led him to participate with numerous mission trips to south Texas and Africa University in Zimbabwe.  He married his wife, May M. Slagel-Blake, on February 15, 2014, and embraced the love and support of many new additions to his family.

Loving survivors include sons, Chuck (Vicki) Blake of Sun City, Florida, and Harold (Jen) Blake of Destin, Florida, daughter, Lisa (Curt) Holmes of Carmel, Indiana, son-in-law, Jeff Carpenter of Roscoe, Illinois and step-daughter, Linda (Harold) Plasterer of Warren, Indiana; eight grandchildren, Marcus Blake (George Higby) of Riverview, Florida, Jon Blake of Carmel, Indiana, Dr. Tricia Holmes (Chris Moberg) of Speedway, Indiana, Julie (Cruiser) Baxter of Roscoe, Illinois, Michelle (Luke) Uhrig of Indianapolis, Indiana, Brian Carpenter of Chicago, Illinois, Amber (Tom) Toner of Fort Walton Beach, Florida and Allyson Holmes of Beech Grove, Indiana,  three step-grandchildren, Machelle (John) Suchcicki of Warren, Indiana, Holly Plasterer of Warren, Pam (Lance) Gray of Wabash, 3 great grandchildren, Ryder and Sawyer Moberg and Gabrielle Uhrig and 7 step-great grandchildren, Devin, Collin and Shaylyn Suchcicki, Nakishia Stout, Courtney Strickler, Ashley and Chance Gray.
