Helen Persche Gallagher, age 86, of Huntington, IN, passed away on Saturday, December 16, 2023, at Saint Anne Communities Victory Noll in Huntington, IN.
Helen was born on February 22, 1937 in Gottschee in what is now Slovenia. Her family became refugees as World War II shifted boundaries, landing in Ridgewood, Queens in 1952. This relocation only served to make family and community ties stronger. As the eldest daughter of Aloisia (Hoefferle) and George Persche with three siblings – Melanie, Gus, and Stephen - Helen’s hard work helped to create a new life in America for those she loved. Secretarial classes to improve her typing led to night school and a master’s degree from Pace University in New York City. She became an economist with Caltex, the same company in which she had started as a secretary. After many years in New York City enjoying cultural attractions, shopping opportunities, and her many friends, work brought her to the Dallas-Fort Worth area, which she embraced with enthusiasm. She never stopped learning and challenging herself; as a member of Toastmasters International she won prizes for public speaking. Over the years, Helen worked closely with her sister, Sr. Melanie, to support the ministry of the Our Lady of Victory Missionary sisters in Bolivia and throughout the United States. In 2017, she moved to St. Anne at Victory Noll to continue her work as an Associate with OLVM.
Helen’s love for her family and friends and the many people who touched her big heart was limitless. This loving spirit was reflected in her openness, her faith, and her ever-present generosity. Angel wings brought her to heaven to be with her parents, Sr. Melanie Persche and Gus Persche, but she’ll always be in the hearts of the many who love her, among them her brother Stephen Persche and his wife Carol, sister-in-law Barbara Persche, nieces and nephew Christine Persche, Melanie Towne, and Stephen Persche, great-nephews Andrew, William, and Garrett Towne, and great-nieces Charlotte and Grace Persche.
