Sally A. Manes

Sally A. Manes, 87 of Huntington, passed away at 7:40 am, Saturday, January 27, 2024, in hospice care.

Sally was born March 1, 1936, in Huntington, the daughter of Ralph “Bill Hosler and Lucille (Gentry) Hosler. She had fond memories of the tree line streets. Her parents passed away when she and brother Scott were young and they were blessed to be taken in, and raised by a great aunt and uncle, Edna (Hosler) and Glenn Jordan, who lived in Huntington. That experience bonded Sally and Scott for life. It was also during that time that Sally met her lifelong friend Kay Bechstein (Hum/Stanton).

Sally graduated from Huntington High School in 1954. Twenty years later, in her mid-30’s, she decided to go to college, and earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education. Achieving her undergraduate from Huntington College in three years and a master’s at St. Francis. She truly was an empowered 70’s woman! Sally enjoyed jobs as telephone operator for Indiana Bell and later, in retirement, as a volunteer at Lutheran Hospital. But being a teacher was her passion. She enjoyed a long career at Northwest, Andrews and Central elementary’s, and was often invited to the graduation of former students. The family is deeply touched by their respect for Sally, and your kindness and sympathy now is overwhelming.

Sally married Kenneth W. Manes on December 10, 1955, in Huntington. They shared 53 years of hard work, raising kids in the 70’s and North Carolina beach vacations, before he died, March 24, 2009. After his death she was surrounded by loving, supportive neighbors and friends, who became the joy of her life. But her greatest love was for her brother Scott and sister-in-law Madonna Hosler. The devotion they shared sustained her through many tough times.

Sally is survived by son, Tony Manes of Littleton, Co; daughter, Julie Crain of Huntington; Brother, Scott (Madonna) Hosler of Huntington, grandchildren, Cassandra, Michael (Sarah).
