John R. Hauenstein

John Raymond Hauenstein, 86 of Markle, died Dec. 18, 2008, at 12:47 p.m. at the Markle Health Care Center.

Mr. Hauenstein graduated from Huntington Township High School in 1940. He served as a corporal with the 3601st Quartermaster Truck Company of the United States Army in Germany during World War II, from Feb. 8, 1943, to Nov. 16, 1945.

He farmed in Union Township of Huntington County and Union Township of Wells County until retiring in 1986. After he retired from farming, he read REMC meters.

He was a member of Bethlehem Evangelical Lutheran Church, Ossian. He served on the Rock Creek Township (Wells County) Advisory Board for 23 years. He also served many years on the board of Horeb Cemetery, Uniondale, and served as sexton at the cemetery.

He was born July 28, 1922, in Huntington County, to John F. and Philabeana Meyer Hauenstein. He married Dorotha R. Schoenauer on Feb. 13, 1949, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Huntington. His wife survives.

Additional survivors include a daughter, Beth Hauenstein, of Columbia City; a son, Mark Hauenstein, of Markle; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

A funeral service was held Dec. 22, 2008, at Bethlehem Evangelical Lutheran Church, Ossian, with Rev. William Brege officiating. Private interment will be held at the Horeb Cemetery, Uniondale.
