Ruth Hasler

Ruth Marie Hasler, 89, of Uniondale, IN, died Saturday, May 2, 2009, at 12:24 p.m. at her daughter’s home in Farmington Hills, MI.

She graduated from Arsenal Technical High School, Indianapolis, in 1937, and from St. Vincent Hospital School of Nursing, Indianapolis, in 1940. She completed graduate work at Charity Hospital in New Orleans, LA, and returned to Indianapolis to work as a private duty nurse. She served in the Navy Nurse Corps from 1943 to 1947, earning the rank of lieutenant, and returned to Indianapolis to work at the Indiana University Medical Center. She also worked as a nurse at Wells Community Hospital for 18 years, serving as director of nursing from 1960 to 1967, and at Veterans Hospital in Fort Wayne from 1967 to 1978. She was a member of the Uniondale United Methodist Church.

She was born July 9, 1919, in Cumberland, to Grover and Emma Anna Ambrose Gise. She married Lowell C. Hasler on Jan. 9, 1949. He preceded her in death in 2006.

Survivors include a brother, Alan Gise, of Santa Fe, NM; two sons, Edward (Karen) Hasler, of Plymouth, MI, and Steven (Judy) Hasler, of Adell, WI; a daughter, Margaret Hasler, of Farmington Hills, MI; and three grandchildren.

A service was held at Thoma/Rich, Chaney & Lemler Funeral Home, Bluffton, on Wednesday, May 6, 2009,  with Rev. Troy Drayer officiating. Burial was at Horeb Cemetery, Uniondale, with graveside military honors by American Legion Post 111 of Bluffton and the United States Navy Honor Guard.
