James Kenneth "Jim" Herndon, 85, of Bluffton, IN, and a native of Huntington, IN, died Thursday evening, Sept. 27, 2012, at River Terrace Estates, in Bluffton.
Mr. Herndon graduated from East Union High School in 1947 and served in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War. He retired from International Harvester as a machinist and had also worked for Lin's Lock and Key. He was a member of Bethel Church, the Union Township Lions Club, American Legion Post 468 of Berne and the Decatur Coin Club.
He was born Sept. 20, 1927, in Huntington County to Elijah J. and Mary L. Holmes Herndon. He married Rita E. Geis on March 26, 1949, in Decatur, and she preceded him in death on Feb. 17, 1966. He married Miriam J. Ginter Sommer on March 4, 1967, in Decatur, and she preceded him in death on April 29, 1996. She married Lela K. Minger Claghorn on July 12, 1997, in Bluffton, and she survives.
Additional survivors include two sons, Daniel P. (Susan) Herndon, of Roanoke, and Leslie K. (Mary) Herndon, of Ossian; six stepsons, Stanley A. Smitley, of Yoder; Gerald L. Smitley, of Fort Wayne; Alan K. (Karey) Claghorn, of Milo, IA; Ted M. (JoAnn) Claghorn, of Bluffton; G. Brian Claghorn, of Shirley; and Bradley W. (Victoria) Claghorn, of Bellbrook, OH; a stepdaughter, Jean A. (Jon) Shepheard, of Wasilla, AK; a stepdaughter-in-law, Sandra S. Claghorn, of Chesterfield; 24 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
A service will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2012, at 10:30 a.m. at Goodwin Memorial Chapel, 3220 E. Ind.-124 Bluffton, with Rev. Lloyd Harlan officiating. Calling is Tuesday, Oct 2, 2012, from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be at Elm Grove Cemetery, Bluffton.
