The Roanoke town council reviewed bids from contractors for storm sewer and street improvements to Commercial Street and awarded a contract for the work during its Tuesday, Oct. 2, meeting.
Wayne Asphalt delivered a bid of $118,598 and council President Troy Karshner introduced a motion to award them the job, which passed unanimously. Other bids were from Brooks Construction Co., Inc. for $138,283 and Phend & Brown for $163,318.
Town Utility Superintendent Paul Swain requested $8,827 from the council to replace curbing in town. After the council determined that the funds would come from the local road and street fund, Karshner introduced a motion that granted Swain the money he requested, with a limit of $9,000; the motion passed unanimously.
Councilman David Tucker brought to the council's attention that the sewage department is in need of a wash sink and that employees of that department need to get hepatitis B vaccinations.
"It's one of those things where the priority is just going back through and making sure that everybody's got (the shots), that we've got the records for it, just a ‘safety first' type thing for the people that work in the town," says Karshner.
Roanoke Park Board President Brandon Taylor informed the council of improvements to the park, which included the replacement of the park's lights with new lights that will help cut back on electricity costs, the refurbishment of the ball diamonds and the construction of new dugouts. Taylor also discussed with the council the possibility of the council contributing money toward the demolition of the front restroom at the park and the construction of a new, larger restroom.
