Running enthusiasts will have the opportunity to enjoy their hobby and celebrate Halloween at the same time - if they participate in the Fright Night 5K Run on Oct. 27 starting at 4:30 p.m. at Kriegbaum Field.
Race day registration will start at 3:30 p.m.
Sponsored by the Huntington Rotary Club, the event will feature a 5K race and one-mile "Mummy Walk."
Joe Santa, member of the 5K planning committee, says the event has been in the works for some time.
"We have been talking about doing a 5K for some time and tying it with Halloween to include kids made sense," Santa states.
The tentative route for the 5K takes runners from Kriegbaum Field, east on Stadium Drive, around Huntington University and back to Kriegbaum Field.
"The one-mile Mummy Walk will be on the track only," Santa adds. "This is for people who still want to support the cause and participate without having to run."
Santa says that in keeping with the spirit of the holiday, race day organizers and assistants will be dressed in costume. He encourages runners and walkers to do the same.
"Medals and awards will be presented to winners in different age groups including best dressed runners and best costume," he says.
There is a cost for the event and if participants register by Oct. 20, they will receive a T-shirt. Registration can be made on race day, but a T-shirts aren't guaranteed.
"Several area businesses will have registration forms and we encourage people to pick the forms up there," Santa states.
"They include Village Animal Hospital, First Federal Savings Bank, First Farmers Bank and Trust, Dyer Health and Wellness, TrophyCenter Plus and Mettler Agency."
Registration is also available online at runrace.net or by calling 504-2717.
"We hope this will be an annual event that benefits the many programs that the Huntington Rotary Club supports," Santa adds.
