Skaters from West Park Skate Center won numerous awards, including two "Top Dog" titles, during a Rookie Racing Speed Meet held at West Park Skate Center.
Jackie Ness won the "Top Dog" race in the 12 and under quad division, while Cameron Ness was the "Top Dog" in the 13 and over quad.
The "Top Dog" races are held at the conclusion of individual races, with each skating center coach selecting the team's best racers in both quad and inline for ages 12 and under and 13 and over. A trophy is presented to the winning skating center until the next meet.
In individual races, first place awards went to Audrey Rittenhouse, Michael Bowers, Joe Bowers, Josh Bowers, Jake Cragun, Jackie Ness and Cameron Ness, all of West Park Skate Center. Second place awards went to Mary Rittenhouse and Jordan Ness.
More than 75 speed skaters, ranging in age from 4 years to over 50, represented skating centers in Auburn, Fort Wayne, Mishawaka, Logansport, Warsaw and Niles, MI. Skaters competed in three races, each differing in distance.
The next speed meet will be held Jan. 6 at Auburn Skatin' Station.
Anyone interested in joining the West Park Skate Center speed team should attend a practice any Friday at 5 p.m. The initial practice is free, and the only equipment required is a bicycle helmet.
