All full-time employees of the town of Andrews, with the exception of the clerk-treasurer, will receive a 3 percent pay increase for 2013.
The salary ordinance was approved by Andrews Town Council members Ray Tackett and John Harshbarger during the council's Dec. 28 meeting. The third council member, Mike Rohler, was absent from the meeting.
The ordinance also abolished longevity pay for members of the town's police department. Tackett, who made the motion to drop longevity pay, said he didn't like the fact that longevity pay was awarded to only police department employees.
Harshbarger proposed the across-the-board 3 percent pay increase instead of the varying raises for each employee that were originally proposed. The 3 percent raise was approved despite concerns by Town Marshal Van Juillerat, who said that an across-the-board raise would result in more money for higher wage earners and, over time, widen the pay gap in employee salaries. Clerk-Treasurer Bill Johnson noted that the across-the-board raise prevents the town from rewarding employees who make exceptional effort in their jobs.
In other business:
• The council hired the engineering firm Butler, Fairman & Seufert to prepare and implement a plan that will allow the town to comply with requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
• Johnson told council members that construction bids for improvements to the Andrews Town Library had all come in higher than the budgeted amount. The library is now investigating options for completing the project, he said.
