The Huntington University baseball team picked up its first two wins of the season by defeating host Grace College 4-0 and 10-3 in a doubleheader on Friday, March 29.
Xyan Adkisson pitched a two-hit shutout and Jamon Hammel had a double and three runs batted in to lead the Foresters to their first win of the season in the opener.
Adam Christner, Josh Lanphier and Marc Bowers each knocked in two runs to lead HU in the nightcap.
In the opener, Huntington, 2-12, led 2-0 after three, with Christner scoring in the first on an error by Dillon Papa and Jordan Klopfenstein crossing home in the second thanks to sacrifice fly by Hammel.
The Foresters made it tough on Grace to pull off a late-game comeback by putting two more runs on the board in the seventh, as Klopfenstein scored again, on a wild pitch by Dellos Schabel, and Hammel hit another sac fly to bring in Ayers.
Adkisson, a senior, went the distance on the mound for Huntington, striking out five for the win.
Grace never had a chance in the second game, as the Foresters pilled on six runs in the first and had three pitchers yield only five hits for the game.
Ayers and Brian Kirschbaum tied for the game-high in hits with three each and scored three and two runs, respectively, for HU. Hammel and Klopfenstein each had two hits.
Cody Walters pitched five innings for the Foresters, surrendering only a hit, before giving way to Blake Hohlbein and Brock Gower. Walters' relief gave up just two hits apiece, though the Lancers did manage to tag Gower for three runs in the sixth and seventh in a comeback attempt that was too little, too late.
