D & R Wallcovering, in Huntington, is celebrating its 25th anniversary.
The owners, Dan and Rite Gallegos, say the business began when they noticed a boom in the wallpapering business.
"We were always doing wallpapering and painting for family and friends and for ourselves," says Rita. "He was in college and got hired in doing wallpapering. He was in the office and he kept hearing all these residential calls coming in."
So many people wanted wallpapering done that it convinced Dan and Rita, in March 1988, to open up their own business.
Over 25 years, Dan has seen consumer tastes shift.
"When we first started it was a lot of wall covering, wallpapering," he says. "That's what I really specialized in. Over the years, we're doing a lot more painting than wallpapering."
One of the highlights from their years in business, they both agree, was getting an award from Vice President Dan Quayle and having dinner with him.
The honor came about when Dan donated $6,000 worth of work to the Quayle Vice Presidential Learning Center, in Huntington.
Dan terms the experience as "One of the best times of my business."
Perhaps the biggest highlight of all, though, is that the Gallegos' have gotten to do something that they both enjoy for so long.
"When you enjoy doing what you're doing it's not hard to get up in the morning," says Rita.
