Despite having no champions in A-level events at the North Side Relays in Fort Wayne on Saturday, April 13, the Huntington North High School boys' varsity track and field team used a series of top 10 finishes to place fifth out of 14 teams.
Jon Rentschler was the Vikings' top place-getter in an individual A-level event, capturing second in shot put with a toss of 48-2.5.
In other field events, Drew Fawcett's leap of 19-0 garnered him sixth in long jump and Rentschler's throw of 120-1 earned him the same place in discus.
Cordell Lewis placed third in the 3,200-meter run in 9:46.79 for Huntington North's lone top 10 in an individual A-level running event.
Lewis joined with Jordan Utter, Charles Mettler and Austin Lange to log the Vikings' best finish in an A-level relay, as the quartet took second in the 3,200-meter relay in 8:52.55.
Fawcett, Jake Shaw, Isaac Smith and Andrew Spahr placed fifth in the 1,600-meter relay in 3:53.05.
Charlie Mettler had Huntington North's best showing in an individual B-level event, winning the 3,200-meter run in 10:07.8.
Adam Woods ran to third in the 110-meter hurdles in :18.53 and fifth in the 300-meter hurdles in 45.71 while Jacob Miller took fourth in the 1,600-meter run in 4:58.67 to complete the Vikings' scoring in individual B-level running events.
In B-level field events, Houston Lehman's 10-6 bound in pole vault snagged him second, Alex Kaylor's pitch of 41-1.75 in shot put fetched him third, Lehman's 5-6 spring in high jump earned him sixth and Nathan Sutter's 104-1 flip in discus also netted him sixth.
The squad of Fawcett, Shaw, Spahr and Jordan Utter ran to third in the sprint medley relay in 1:44.35 for Huntington North's top showing in a B-level relay.
Dustin Campbell, Aaron Ebert, Collin Wesco and Jacob Miller placed fourth in the distance medley relay in 12:12.05; Utter, Lehman, Adam Berlier and Andrew Sizemore placed fifth in the 800-meter relay in 1:39.63; and Sutter, Spahr, Smith and Shaw landed in fifth in the 400-meter relay in :46.10.
Wayne won the invitational with 120 points. North Central was runner-up with 108 points, followed by Bishop Dwenger with 107, Homestead with 97 and Huntington North with 78.
