Four Huntington University pitchers limited visiting Bethel College to just one run on the day as the Foresters swept a doubleheader Monday, April 15, 2-0 and 3-1.
Xyan Adkisson and Brian Kirschbaum combined for a five-hit shutout in the opener, and Kyle Zerfas and Blake Hohlbein limited the visitors to just four hits in the nightcap.
Adam Christner's two-run homer in the third inning provided the Foresters, 9-17, 9-7 in the Crossroads League, with the winning cushion in the nightcap.
The Foresters got the only run they needed in the opener in the first inning when Blake Ayers scored Jordan Klopfenstein, who had singled earlier, on a groundout.
Adkisson, a senior, went 6.1 innings and had three strikeouts and no walks. He took a three-hitter into the seventh but gave up two hits, at which point Kirschbaum came on to close out the contest.
The Foresters scored an insurance run in the fifth on a Dustin Rutledge single, Brock Gower sacrifice bunt, a wild throw and a Christner groundout.
HU only got four hits off Bethel hurler Luke Pepple.
The Foresters got all three of their runs in the second game in the third inning. Marc Bowers started things with a two-out walk, and after a wild pitch, Christner parked a 3-1 pitch over the left field fence for his third homer of the season. Klopfenstein got a walk and scampered home on an Ayers double to left.
Zerfas pitched the first 5.1 innings and had three strikeouts. He gave up the Bethel run in the sixth, but Hohlbein came on to put out the fire.
Christner had two hits and two RBI for the contest.
