Winning four of the five field events fueled the Huntington North High School girls' track team to the championship of the Marion Track and Field Sectional on Tuesday, May 14, at Indiana Wesleyan University.
Seniors Alexis Wygant and Onna Doering won the pole vault and discus, respectively, and juniors Lindsey Foster and Maddie Klender captured the long jump and shot put, respectively, as the Lady Vikings piled up 167 points, 57 more than runner-up Oak Hill. Norwell was third with 85 points and Marion was fourth among 13 teams competing with 74 points.
Senior Kayla Patrick and freshman Hanna Stoffel went 1-2 in the 800-meter run and the Lady Vikings also got first place points from their 3,200-meter relay team of Patrick, Stoffel, Stephanie McElhaney and Lauren Daas.
Senior Machaela Mertz was the Lady Vikes' top scorer in individual races, collecting runner-up points in all three dashes.
The top four finishers in each event earned the right to compete at the Fort Wayne Northrop Regional on Tuesday, May 21.
Wygant went 9-0 in the vault for her win, while Doering heaved the disc 105-10 for her win. Foster flew 17-5 to claim her title, and Klender won the shot with a heave of 38-2.
Patrick and Stoffel went 2:22.29 and 2:22.81, respectively, in the 800. The relay team went 9:45.82 to blow up the field by almost 26 seconds for its win.
In addition to the Patrick and Stoffel duo, the Lady Vikes had three other event in which they had two regional qualifiers. Mertz and Foster went 2-3, respectively, in the 200-meter dash, in :26.75 and :26.97; Stoffel and Karson Rowe placed second and fourth, respectively, in the 1,600-meter run, in 5:26.18 and 5:30.08; and Lauren Sands finished fourth in the shot put at 33-11.
Mertz went :13.0 to finish second in the 100-meter dash and 1:00.38 for her 400-meter dash runner-up spot. The Lady Vikings' 1,600-meter relay team of Patrick, Wygant, Foster and Mertz also placed second, in 4:04.65.
Additional third place finishes for HNHS came from Marie Ditzler in the 3,200-meter run, in 12:30.29, and the 400-meter relay team of Allie Christian, Alexa Shoemaker, Jamie Feller and Foster, which took its bronze in :51.98.
Additional fourth place qualifiers included Christian in the 100-meter hurdles, in :17.12, and Shoemaker in the 300-meter hurdles, in :50.78.
