The Parkview Huntington YMCA is using a grant from LACE (Local Anti-drug Coalition Efforts) in several of its programs to make youth aware of the harmful effects of tobacco and drug use.
The programs - Boost Camp, Power Club, summer day camp and Wellness Through Sports - are a collaborative effort of the YMCA, LACE and the Huntington Health and Wellness Coalition.
The LACE grant funded the purchase of educational materials that are distributed to youth during the programs.
Boost Camp, a comprehensive health and wellness program, is offered at the Boys & Girls Club during the summer. Fitness staff members from the YMCA conduct the sessions.
During summer day camp and the Wellness Through Sports program at the YMCA, youth ages 6 and older learn about the dangers of tobacco and drug use.
Power Club, an after-school program for middle school youth, includes strength training, cardio and active games. Participants also learn about the dangers of tobacco, cyber-bullying, cooking healthy meals and other topics. Additional agencies collaborating on Power Club are Youth Services Bureau, Huntington University, Purdue Extension, YWCA and the Boys & Girls Club.
