The Huntington North High School varsity football team was edged by host Kokomo, 14-7, on Friday, Sept. 13.
Offensive possessions came at a premium for the Vikings, 1-3, 1-1 in the North Central Conference (NCC), thanks to a Wildkat running game that kept the ball in the host's hands. And when Huntington North did have possession, Kokomo, 1-3, 1-1 in the NCC, made the right calls to stymie the Vikings' high-flying offense.
The Wildkats led the Vikings at halftime 6-0 and pushed the lead to 14-0 by the 8:30 mark in the third quarter.
But Huntington North quarterback Keenan Leichty connected with running back Kole Hale for a 77-yard score with less than a minute remaining in the third to make things 14-7.
The Vikings had a final try in the waning minutes of the game after their defense put up a goal-line stand, but Wildkat cornerback Cuba Evans intercepted Leichty to end the Vikings' comeback hopes.
