Phyllis Joan Pond, 82, of New Haven, IN, and a former resident of Warren, IN, died Sunday, Sept. 22, 2013.
Mrs. Pond was elected to the Indiana General Assembly in 1978 and had planned to retire from that seat in October 2013. She was named a Sagamore of the Wabash on Nov. 2, 1984, by Gov. Robert Orr.
She graduated from Warren High School in 1948, Ball State University in 1951 and Indiana University Education in 1963. She taught in Eaton, Raleigh and Plymouth before becoming a kindergarten teacher at New Haven Elementary School, where she worked for 37 years before retiring in 1998. She had volunteered as a Girl Scout leader, 4-H leader and Cub Scout den mother and was a long-time member of Emanuel Lutheran Church, in New Haven.
She was born Oct. 25, 1930, to Clifford and Rosa Ruble. She is survived by her husband of 62 years, George Pond.
Additional survivors include two sons, Douglas Pond, of Indianapolis, and Dr. William (Cami) Pond, of Fort Wayne; a daughter, Jean Grasmick, of Zionsville; four grandchildren, Greg Pond, Scott Pond, Joel Aiken and Jennifer (Jon) Knepp; and three great-grandchildren.
Calling is Thursday, Sept. 26, 2013, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Emanuel Lutheran Church, 800 Green St., New Haven. A service will be held at the church on Friday, Sept. 27, 2013, at 10:30 am., with Rev. Scott Zeckzer officiating. Burial will be at Woodlawn Cemetery, Warren.
Memorial gifts may be made to Emanuel Lutheran Church or Pulmonary Fibrosis Association.
