Placing all five scoring runners among the top nine finishers was the ticket for the Huntington North High School boys' varsity cross country team as it edged Kokomo to win the North Central Conference meet on Tuesday, Oct. 8, at Indiana Wesleyan University.
Led by senior Charlie Mettler's runner-up finish, the Vikings scored 30 points to Kokomo's 34, despite Kokomo having the individual champion and the third and fourth place finishers. While Huntington's fourth and fifth place finishers placed eighth and ninth, respectively, Kokomo's last two scorers were 12th and 14, giving the win to the Vikings.
Mettler crossed the finish line in 16:37.6 to finish 18 seconds behind winner Jeremy Breedlove of Kokomo. Austin Lange took fifth for the Vikings in 17:03.2, Luke Doughty grabbed sixth in 17:07.7, Matt DeWitt was eighth in 17:21.4 and Cam DeWitt placed ninth in 17:26.5.
Kyler McVoy was the sixth Huntington runner to cross the line, placing 10th to join the first five HN runners as all-conference. Christian Jones took 16th in 18:02.9.
Logansport placed third as a team with 75 points, followed by Marion with fourth at 111, Muncie Central in fifth with 125, Anderson sixth with 172 and Richmond in seventh with 207.
The Vikings' dominated in the junior varsity race, taking eight of the top nine places. Logan Worsham was the winner in 17:50, Dustin Campbell was second in 18:03, Dillon Valenti was third in 18:06, Aaron Ebert was fourth in 18:09 and Garret Smith took fifth, also in 18:09. Collin Wesco placed sixth in 19:06, Matt Hunt was seventh in 19:18 and Jordan Utter was ninth in 19:32.
