Senior wide receiver Scott McClellan hauled in four touchdowns to help lead the Huntington North High School varsity football team to a 35-16 win over visiting Richmond on Friday, Oct. 11.
McClellan and quarterback Keenan Leichty hooked up three times in a second quarter surge that took the Vikings, 4-4, from an 8-7 first quarter deficit to a 28-8 halftime lead.
Overall, McClellan's career night included 12 catches for 189 yards as the Vikings improved to 4-2 in the North Central Conference.
Leichty, also a senior, completed 22 of 37 pass attempts for 296 yards and the four scores, with two interceptions, and he ran for a fifth score as well.
The senior duo got HNHS on the board first with a 28-yard scoring play in the opening frame, but Richmond, 6-2 and 4-1 in the NCC, took the lead at 8-7 less than two minutes later when the Red Devils' Jordan Christian connected with Matt Morrow on a 48-yard scoring strike, and the Devils stuck in a two-point conversion.
The second quarter, however, was all Leichty and McClellan, with a good dose of HNHS defense as well. Leichty hurled scoring strikes of 16, 53 and 15 yards to the 6-4 McClellan, and the Viking defense kept Richmond off the board.
Leichty scored the only touchdown of the third quarter, on a 5-yard run, and Richmond got back on the board with a 14-yard scoring pass from Christian to Tyler Ripperger early in the final frame to push the score to its final resting place.
The Vikings added 107 yards on the ground, with Austin Rosen lugging the leather 14 times for 64 yards.
Kole Hale caught six passes for 66 yards to add to the HNHS cause.
The Viking D choked off the Richmond ground game by holding it to just 46 yards on 26 rushes. Richmond also was held to just 131 yards through the air for a combined offense total of 177 yards, compared to the Vikings' total of 403.
Adam Woods led the Viking defense with five solo tackles -- including two for losses -- and four assists. Drew Fawcett had five solo tackles -- one for a loss -- and two assists and Jackson Cain had four solos and two assists.
