The Huntington University volleyball team nearly doubled its win total for the season by going 3-1 at the Davenport University Invitational on Friday, Oct. 11, and Saturday, Oct. 12.
The Foresters opened the tourney by losing to No. 24 Davenport, but then beat Rochester College, Aquinas College and the University of Michigan Dearborn to improve to 7-17 on the season.
The Foresters opened up the invitational against the host Panthers and gave the NAIA's 24th-ranked team a run for its money before falling in three games, 21-15, 19-25, 8-25.
Melissa Grossman led a balanced attack with four kills to go along with three blocks. Heather Medich added three kills and just as many blocks while Jensen Carnahan registered three kills, seven digs and 13 assists. Codie Morey finished with a team-high 12 digs.
Huntington bounced back Friday night to earn a 3-1 win over Rochester, losing a 23-25 nail-biter but then coming back to win the next three, 25-17, 25-16 and 25-17.
Three Foresters registered double digit kills with Abbey Keister leading the way with 14. Grossman added 13 while Medich tallied 11 and just as many digs. Carnahan dished out 42 assists to go along with 11 digs and a team-high four blocks. Morey finished with a match-high 22 digs.
The Foresters continued their winning ways on Saturday, notching a four-setter over Aquinas, 25-23, 21-25, 25-22, 25-22.
Medich came up big for Huntington to finish with 19 kills, AND Grossman also had a big game with 16 kills, and three blocks. Audrey Mallers and Keister added 10 and nine kills, respectively. Carnahan dished out 54 assists while Morey again paced her team defensively with 17 digs.
Huntington wrapped up the invitational with a 3-1 decision, 25-22, 25-22, 23-25, 25-19, over the University of Michigan Dearborn.
Grossman topped the Foresters with 14 kills and five blocks. Keister chipped in 10 kills while Carnahan tallied 35 assists to go along with 12 digs. Morey duplicated her efforts from the day's first match with 17 digs.
