Going into halftime trailing Lincoln 22-6, the Riverview Middle School seventh grade football team mounted a big second half comeback, winning 34-28 on Tuesday, Oct. 22, to advance to the Northeast Lakes Middle School Conference (NELMSC) championship game.
Touchdowns by Logan Hippensteel, Levi Bennet and Andrew Smekens put the Raiders in front, 28-22, late in the fourth quarter. Lincoln knotted things up on a touchdown run, but the Riverview defense denied their two-point conversion attempt to keep things at 28-28. On the next play, Hippensteel ran the kickoff back 80 yards to score the game's final points.
Heading the defensive effort that limited Lincoln to only six points after the half was Smekens and Sam White, who both grabbed interceptions, and Levi Teusch, who scooped up a fumble.
Malcolm Rose put Riverview on the board in the first half with a 30-yard touchdown reception.
The Raiders improve to 8-1 and will face Edgewood at Lakeview Middle School, in Warsaw, for the NELMSC title on Tuesday, Oct. 29.
