The Huntington North High School boys' varsity basketball team fought back from a 20-point halftime deficit to tie the game in regulation, but lost to host Marion in overtime, 101-92, on Thursday, Feb. 13
The Vikings, 10-9, got a career-high 29 points from senior Kyle Platt as they had the 13-4 Giants reeling after coming back from a halftime deficit of 47-27 to tie the game in regulation at 80-all. But Marion, which got 48 points from Indiana University recruit James Blackmon, won the extra frame 21-12 for the win.
Huntington North burned up the nets in the second half with a 17 of 22 shooting performance from the field, which included 5 of 6 from downtown, and they added 14 of 18 from the free-throw line in the second half as well. The Vikes wound up hitting 33 of 53 shots from the field for 62.3 percent for the entire contest.
The Vikings had four double figure scorers in the shootout, getting 18 points from Matt Hogan, 14 from Keaton Irwin and 13 from Caleb Landrum.
Marion jumped out to a 22-11 lead after the first quarter and built the margin as high as 22 points in the second quarter before the Vikings mounted their comeback. A 34-15 edge in the third quarter cut the Marion advantage to 65-61 entering the final frame.
Platt nailed 11 of 15 shots from the field and all six of his free throws for his point production, and for good measure he led everyone on the boards with 12 rebounds.
Hogan hit 6 of 8 shots from the field to give him 20 of 29 for his last three games.
The Giants' Blackmon, who went into the game averaging over 33 points per contest, connected on 14 of 23 shots from the field, including 9 of 15 from three-point land, and hit 11 of 14 from the charity stripe for his big output.
Blackmon's younger brother, Vijay, played wing man for his older sibling with 25 points, hitting 9 of 13 shots from the field. Reggie Jones and Cor'Nell Wingate added 10 points apiece for the Giants.
The Giants hit 33 of 63 shots from the field for 52.4 percent, including 14 of 28, 50 percent marksmanship from downtown, and they added 21 of 29 at the stripe for 62.4 percent.
Led by Platt's rebounding efforts, the Vikings tied the Giants on the boards, 31-31.
Hogan led HNHS with six assists. Irwin added four.
The Vikings' junior varsity lost a 39-37 thriller.
Hunter Hollowell added 20 points and Luke Stroud added 11.
