Huntington University freshman guard Derek Hinen was named the Crossroads League Player of the Week for the week of Feb. 17 in addition to being named the Forester Athlete of the Week.
In the Foresters' 87-81 upset of No. 12 Bethel College on Tuesday, Feb. 11, the Columbia City native poured in a career-best 33 points on 11 for 13 shooting which included six treys. He also knocked down all six of his freebies in the final 20 seconds, dished out a game-high five assists and made two steals.
He followed up his career night by helping guide Huntington to its second win of the week, a 64-62 decision over Grace College on Saturday, Feb. 15. Hinen tossed in nine points, got down three boards and handed out three assists.
On the season, Hinen is averaging 13.3 points and 3.9 rebounds per outing. He also dishes out a team-best 5.4 assists, which places him 14th in NAIA Division II in assists per game. He is shooting 51.0 percent from the field, which includes knocking down 46.2 percent of his attempts from behind the arc.
