Christmas at the Forks fund-raiser is Dec. 1-2

The 14th annual Christmas at the Forks returns to the Forks of the Wabash Historic Park on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 1 and 2. This community goodwill event raises funds to benefit the school tours program and other activities at the Forks. Volunteers are currently enlisting sponsors and decorators for the event.

The highlight of the holiday event is the variety of colorful trees and wreaths decorated with various themes by local businesses, clubs and organizations. The public is invited to attend on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sunday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. No admission is charged.

Festivities kick off Saturday morning with Breakfast with Santa, sponsored and served by the Huntington Metro Kiwanis Club. Pancakes and sausages will be served from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. in the Chief Richardville Room in the Forks museum. Children may visit with Santa and families are encouraged to bring cameras.

A favorite activity at the festival is voting for the “crowd favorite” tree and wreath. Visitors can purchase tickets to vote and place their vote tickets in the container for their favorite tree or wreath. At 4 p.m. Sunday, one ticket will be drawn from each voting container and the lucky voter will be awarded that particular tree or wreath. The winner of each tree or wreath may take it home. Often, a winner will make arrangements to donate their prize to another family or organization to spread Christmas cheer. All trees and wreaths will be awarded.

Miami Indian representatives will be at the historic Chiefs’ House on Saturday from noon to 5 p.m. and on Sunday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The home will be decorated with period decorations. There will be traditional Indian pudding, hot mulled cider and other baked goods and Native American crafts for sale. Guests may also tour the 1834 home of the Miami Chiefs Jean Baptiste Richardville and Francis LaFontaine.
