Homespun Day set for Saturday, Sept. 4

Santa Claus made an early appearance last year, showing up during the 2009 Zanesville Homespun Day parade. This year’s celebration in Zanesville is set for Saturday, Sept. 4, with a parade at 10 a.m. TAB file photo.

The 28th Annual Zanesville Homespun Day festival is scheduled for this Saturday, Sept. 4, perfect timing for a Labor Day weekend activity.

The festival will open Saturday morning with the Quilt and Needlework Show from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Zanesville United Methodist Church Tower Life Center.

Zanesville United Methodist Church will host a pancake and sausage breakfast from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. at the church. Tickets are available in advance or at the door.

As the breakfast wraps up, craft, antique and flea market booths will open at 9 a.m. The booths will extend along Van Horn Street from the parking lot of Z.U.M. to the Lions Building.

Booths are available for a cost, and electricity is available.

Be sure to watch for the ZUM-Stik trailer for its famous ZUM-Stiks. (For those not familiar, ZUM-Stiks are fresh fruit on a stick dipped in chocolate.)
Meanwhile, the Lions Club Car Show will be in full swing beginning at 8:30 a.m. in the Z.U.M. parking lot.

Entries can be made in advance or the day of the show. The first 100 entries will receive dash plaques, and door prizes and a 50/50 drawing will take place. Car, truck and motorcycle awards will be presented at 2 p.m.

Concurrently with the car show there will be a Model Car and Truck Contest the entire day. There is an entry fee for the first model, and a reduced fee for subsequent models. First and second place awards will be given at 1 p.m. in two categories, ages 6-14 and 15 and up. Model classes include box stock, customer, competition, street rod, slammer, special interest, diorama and best of show. No pre-registration is necessary.

Proceeds from the car show and the model car show will go to Zanesville Lions Club projects, including the ballpark.

The annual Zanesville Homespun Day Parade will take place on Zanesville's main thoroughfares beginning at 10 a.m. The parade will begin in the Stoney Brook addition, and then continue west on County Line Road, south on Wayne Street, east on Van Horn Street, north on Marzane Road and then back east on County Line Road before disbanding. Grand marshals for this year's parade will be sets of twins with ties to Zanesville.

At the completion of the parade, horse-drawn wagon rides through town will be available fro no cost. Tours leave from the lower level of Zanesville United Methodist.
Also after the parade, the Zanesville Church of God will sell baked goods, snow cones and brats at its location near the Zanesville Ballpark. The booths will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

At 11 a.m., the Zanesville Lions Club will hold its annual Chicken Barbecue at the Zanesville Ballpark. In addition to the chicken, a salad bar and apple dumplings will be available.

Zanesville United Brethren Church will sponsor its annual Bike Rodeo at the lower level of Zanesville United Methodist. An obstacle course and other activities will be set up, and trophies will be awarded. All ages are welcome, and riders must bring his or her own helmet.

Providing afternoon entertainment will be the "Voices of Power," an all-volunteer young adult singing group out of Bluffton. The group specializes in Christian music, and will be outside of Z.U.M. This group entertained festival-goers several years ago.

Finally, one of Homespun Day's biggest events is the annual slow-pitch softball tournament. At least 10 teams have already signed up, and the tournament will continue Saturday and Sunday. Team slots may still be available, contact Ked Bailey at 638-4555 for details.
