Regional champion Drabenstot leads four Viking trackmen to state

Senior shotputter Rex Drabenstot claimed a championship and the Huntington North High School boys' track team will be sending three other athletes to the state track meet from their performances at the Fort Wayne Wayne Boys' Regional Track Meet on Thursday, May 28.

Junior Josh Graham qualified twice for state, and senior Rob Sands and junior Ross Ochs will also be making the trip to Indiana University on Friday, June 5.

Graham qualified in both the 800-meter and 1,600-meter runs, placing third and second, respectively; Sands did so with a second place finish in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles and Ochs got his pass by placing third in the 3,200-meter run.

The top three place finishers in each event plus athletes meeting state qualifying standards were eligible to move on.

Drabenstot met the state standard and topped the shot put field with his heave of 55-09.75, which gave him the crown by close to two feet.

Graham punched his first ticket to state by placing runner-up in the 1,600, then came back with his third in the 800.

Sands, the Vikings' Mr. Versatile, got nipped in the 300 hurdles by .05 seconds by Nathan Mueller of East Noble.
Sands also scored points for HNHS in the long jump with a sixth place finish, helping the team to a sixth place standing with 45 points. Ches McClure added fifth place points in the shot.
