Young Vikings finish eighth at regional golf tournament

"Wait ‘til next year'' has good meaning for the Huntington North High School boys' golf team, which will return four of five golfers who placed eighth in the Muncie Central Golf Regional Tournament on Friday, June 12.

The Vikings recorded a 327 at The Player's Club to end their season, but only senior Brandon Whitesell ended his high school career. Garrett Bracht, a senior next season, fired a 76 to lead the young Vikings, who will also return current sophomore EJ Tackett and Neal Hamilton and current freshman Jordan Sweet.

Tackett backed up Bracht with a 77, Hamilton fired an 83 and Sweet had a 91. Whitesell was non-scorer with a 99.

Carmel won the regional with a 298 score. Hamilton Southeastern was runner-up with a 300 and Yorktown grabbed the third and final state-qualifying spot with a 302.

Patrick Kundenrich of Yorktown was medalist with a 70, followed by Brodie Willliams of Lapel, Wes Bowman of Hamilton and Drew Imel of Norwell, each of whom fired rounds of 71. Williams and Imel, along with Alex Stinson of Liberty Christian and Jake Groniger of Pendleton Heights, advance to state as individuals. Stinson and Groniger each recorded scores of 73.

Norwell finished fourth as a team with a 307, Noblesville was fifth with a 311 and Richmond was sixth with a 316. Connersville edged HNHS by one stroke for seventh, and Muncie Central was one stroke behind HNHS in the 12-team competition.
