Speed, Foresters hold off No. 7 Concordia for upset

Pazia Speed scored 22 points and the Huntington University women's basketball team held off a late rally to upset seventh-ranked host Concordia University 76-66 on Tuesday, Nov. 6.

The Foresters, 2-0, used a 19-8 run to close out the first half and turn a 25-23 lead into a 44-31 halftime advantage. The lead grew as high as 20 points with just under 13 minutes to go, but Concordia chopped the mark down to just six points with 1:02 left in the contest.

Speed hit a pair of free throws with 44 seconds left to push the lead back to eight points, and Concordia didn't get closer than seven for the final 30 seconds.

Former Huntington North star Taylor Foley hit three baskets and had two assists in the HU run to push the Foresters into their halftime advantage.

Allison Greene backed up Speed with 15 points, Foley added 12 and Lauren Meese had 10 as the Foresters had four double figures scorers for the second straight game.

HU hit 29 of 61 field goal attempts for 47.5 percent, including hitting 20 of 37, 54.1 percent in the first half.

Foley, a junior, led the Foresters with nine boards, and she tied with Speed for the assists lead with three.

Lauren Meese had a team-high five steals, and Greene added four.

Hannah Sabol led Concordia with 17 points. Marion Rodriquez had 14 points, Mara Mulroy added 12 and Colleen Szakacaz had 10.

Sabol grabbed a game-high 12 boards to lead Concordia to a slight 38-36 rebounding advantage.

The hosts hit 27 of 63 shots from the field for 42.9 percent.

A field goal by Sabol at the 8:32 mark pulled Concordia to within 25-23, but Foley assisted on a Kelsey Hubble hoop to push the margin to 27-23 a minute later. Foley then hit the game's next two field goals for an eight-point HU lead. After a CU bucket, Foley assisted on a Speed basket and got another of her own as HU opened up a 35-25 lead with 4:12 left in the half.
